Orangemen pass Dromore Cathedral

The annual Twelfth of July celebrations began with Orangemen gathering at Dromore Orange Hall from just after 8.00am. Unfurling banners and donning their collarettes, lodges made their way through Market Square on their way to board buses on the Banbridge Road, and on to the main demonstration at Waringstown.

On the way to buses, the band traditionally entertains residents at Skeagh House to a musical selection whilst lodge members look on.

Angling First

PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott took time out from his busy schedule to drop in to a cross community angling event featuring children from St Colman's and Central PS, Dromore.

A keen angler himself, Mr Baggott couldn't resist the temptation to do a spot of fishing himself.

Dromore Fire and Rescue Service

Councillors from Banbridge District Council paid a visit to Dromore Fire Station. They met local firefighters from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, discussed the work of the brigade and watched one of the weekly practice drills.

Ulster Fly Fishing Championships

The river Lagan at Dromore was the venue for the 2010 Ulster Rivers Fly Fishing Championships. Fishermen from all over Ulster were hosted by Dromore Angling Club for the first time in seven years.

'Evo' gets the message across

The Police Service for Northern Ireland has introduced a new road safety agent – a 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution which had originally been destined for ‘retirement’ from the force. Road Policing Branch, in conjunction with the Police and Community Partnership and around 22 local companies which provided sponsorship, has given the car a complete external and internal re-fit. The car will be used around the country to help the PSNI promote road safety and encourage drivers who may be thinking of modifying their vehicles to seek professional advice.

“Evo” was an instant hit with visitors to the pit area of the Circuit of Ireland Rally and the Dromore in Action Committee is hoping to have her available for the town’s ‘Soap Box Derby’ in Mount Street during Civic Week at the beginning of May.

Katie is one year old

I helped Katie's family celebrate her first birthday with a photoshoot at her home. Katie is a beautiful baby girl who is overflowing with character and fun. We spent time rolling an orange on the kitchen table, banging windows at the cat outside, looking at ourselves in the bedroom mirrors and chasing around the living room! I'm sure Katie slept well that night - I know I did!

Dromore couple Elizabeth and Herbie McDonald
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary

I was invited to photograph this happy, contented couple at their Banbridge Road home to mark their milestone celebration. I accepted the commission on the understanding that I would also photograph the next 50th anniversary! I always begin my family work with a cup of coffee and I knew Elizabeth would be well prepared - scones, fruit cake and other goodies! They are so relaxed together and easy to get on with and it was a privilege to spend a very enjoyable hour or so capturing their love and relationship, and listening to a myriad of stories from their years together.

50 Happy Years!

Lily and Tom Crookshanks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with family and friends at a reception in Dromore Rugby Club. The happy couple requested no gifts but rather a voluntary donation to their chosen charities - Mountvale Nursing Home and Dromore NSP Church Building Fund. They were delighted to count in excess of £1300 at the end of the night - with more to come in!

Tom and Lily were married on 19 March 1960 in Bann Road Presbyterian Church by the late Rev Hugh Moore. They honeymooned in Bournemouth, flying from Nutts Corner to Heathrow on tickets which cost £100 each.

Church Square, Banbridge

Most visitors to Banbridge will recognise the town's Church Square. Linking the Dromore, Lurgan and Castlewellan Roads the square has at it's centre, the Crozier Monument. Banbridge town's most famous son was probably Captain Crozier of North West Passage fame who was born in 1796 at a large house, also in the the Square. Around the square one can also view the Masonic Hall, Holy Trinity Parish Church, the former police station, and the Coach Inn.

Below I've included an alternative view of Church Square. I was photographing my good friend, Charlie Graham for his poetry book, "With Love As Always" and decided to photograph from Ballymoney Hill and use the town as a background. Traffic can be seen in Church Square in the distance.

Pre-wedding celebration?

I was photographing out along the Banbridge Road on Saturday evening. It had been a lovely day - not before time, given the winter we've had to endure. The sun was shining, the town was basking in the glow, and people were enjoying a walk past Dromore Town Park. Gradually, through the peace and tranquillity of the day was heard the repeated, pumping of car horns in the distance.

As the sound got nearer, a 4x4 vehicle with a trailer passed and as the driver noticed me with my camera, slowed down to allow me to view these two poor creatures whose only crime seems to be that they are to marry imminently. Sodden, bound and paraded through the streets - they didn't seem to be enjoying the view!

Where does this "tradition" come from? How does this "help" the couple celebrate their decision to spend a lifetime together? I don't know of any couple who sit down together on a wedding anniversary and re-live, through photos and laughter, such kidnapping and humiliation. Thankfully I missed out on this particular tradition thirty one years ago!

Dromore ran out comprehensive winners in this Kukri Qualifying League match at Barban Hill between Dromore and Cooke. Officials from both clubs enjoyed a fantastic lunch in the clubrooms before the game, sponsored by Trevor Hanna and Alistair Thompson. But from the first whistle, Dromore was determined to push for a win and a possible third place finish in the league. Dromore won 60-17.

90 years young!

Ted Carey, the President of Skeogh Flute Band recently enjoyed his 90th birthday. He joined the band in 1928 and, all being well, when the band turns out on the 12th of July morning to lead Skeagh LOL861 to "The Field" Ted will celebrate 82 years a member!

A former bass drummer with the band, Ted chats to members of Skeogh Flute Band drum corps when the band turned up at his house to celebrate his 90th birthday - 82 of them as a band member.

Back to school!

I was invited to talk about my work to Applied Business Studies students at Banbridge High School. The pupils were particularly interested in the setting up and maintaining of a small business - they each intend setting up their own business as part of their course. After discussing challenges, difficulties and finance, I talked about the professional advice and support that I've received, as well as my satisfaction and successes.

I have received on-going support from the Banbridge Enterprise Centre since completing the "Go for it" programme in 2007. My membership of the Society of Wedding and Professional Photographers (SWPP) has been central to my photographic expertise and also my business expansion. Personal and social networking though both organisations have been particularly helpful to me.

The students were very attentive and enjoyed a number of slideshows of my work and a display of prints. After discussing something of how I go about photographing a subject, we finished off with a short portrait session with a few of the young people who didn't have to go on to other classes.

More than a pretty face

Katy Walsh from Hillsborough, Co Down, is more than just a pretty face. Katy works for Graham's Highway Management and Maintenance team driving a massive 32 tonne (when fully loaded) gritter and is the only such female driver in Northern Ireland.

Year 8 pupils at Dromore High School are dwarfed by the size of Katy Walsh's 32 tonne (fully loaded) road salt spreader. Katy called at the school to help students put the study of their science module, "Salt of the Earth" in context.

Young Farmer

I photographed one of Northern Ireland's young farmers for a regular piece in the Newsletter's Farming Life supplement. William Kelly has been a member of Spa Young Farmers Club for thirteen years. He farms sheep just outside Ballynahinch and the day we were working together was not only very cold, there was a real downpour. At one point we were virtually stranded in one of the sheep pens! A BSc(Hon) graduate of the University of Ulster, William credits the YFC with giving him the opportunity to gain a wide range of experiences, and make many friends from throughout Northern Ireland and further afield - but adds that the social life of a Young Farmer is hard to beat!

Dromore Church remembers former minister

Rev Sam Peden of Dromore Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church welcomed Rev William McMillan MBE back to the church he was 'brought up in' to celebrated the life and service of former minister, Rev Alexander E Peaston. Mr Peaston, educated at Oxford and Harvard, was a well known character around the town for over thirty years. He was known as an erudite scholar and common sense minister, and was greatly loved by his congregation.

Dromore High School Formal 2010

Pupils and staff at Dromore High School enjoy the annual School Leavers Formal at Edenmore Golf Club, Magheralin. John Wilkinson (Headmaster) and his staff enjoyed relaxing with the young people they have taught and watched grow and develop over five years at the school.

At the SWPP London conference I attended a superclass presented by Stuart Bebb. Stuart has won many awards for his work and at the conference's glittering Awards Dinner he was awarded 'Traditional Wedding Photographer 2009' AND 'Contemporary Wedding Photographer 2009'. In fact, I specifically chose Stuart's Superclass precisely because he was a major award winner at the two previous conferences that I attended. Stuart has been dedicated to capturing stunning photographic images for over 20 years. His stylish contemporary photography reflects today's lifestyle and he is known for his warm spirit and keen eye for detail.

2nd Dromara Presbyterian Church

The congregation of 2nd Dromara Presbyterian Church turned out in force for a number of special events to mark the retirement of the minister, Rev David C. Porter. Mr Porter was ordained in 1976 and has been pastor to the Dromara church since January 2001.

The Business Network, Banbridge

The January meeting of the Banbridge Business Network took place in Banbridge Enterprise Centre. Local entrepreneur, Russell Miller outlined his business background and described how he has set up and developed his SuperValu store at Dromore. The monthly member spot was presented by Alan Forbes of Hygiene Zone.

Alan and Russell are joined by Beth Gibb of Beth Gibb Associates after the meeting for informal networking.

The Network is into it's third year of operation and boasts a membership of over forty businesses from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Meetings take place at the Banbridge Enterprise Centre on the last Thursday of each month and begin with a light breakfast at 7.30am.

For a second year I was fortunate to work with Scottish photographer John Baikie at the SWPP conference. John Baikie ASWPP, LMPA is an international award winning photographer who specialises in weddings throughout the UK and Europe. He also undertakes high fashion lifestyle portraiture and his commercial work boasts an impressive list of clients. His shoots are described as "different", "edgy" but lots of fun. This was my second time working with Natalie also. Natalie is not only beautiful but patient, helpful and fantastic to work with. This year we were out and about the Novotel and its environs exploring the use of off-camera flash and video lighting.

Dromore Central Primary School Carol Service was held in First Dromore Presbyterian Church. The service included musical pieces from the school's young brass, violin, clarinet and woodwind musicians with a delightful "Little Donkey" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" by the Year 2 Bell Ringers. Two more of my images have been awarded "Gold" in image competitions organised by the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographer (SWPP). Gold images are deemed to be images of the highest standard. They will go forward to the annual judging and winners are announced at the Society's Annual Awards Dinner in London in January. They are also published in "Professional Imagemaker" magazine. I have Gold images in the Landscape, Monochrome, Sport and Travel categories.

One scary dude with a big chopper

From the City Guide to Valencia: the Mercado Central is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Designed in 1914 by Francisco Guardia and Alejandro Soler it was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1928. With a surface area of over 8000 square meters, inside you can find almost whatever in the more than 1000 selling posts: fresh fish, vegetables, meat, fruit... You must go inside to feel the atmosphere of the market, and being surrounded by the smells and colours of this place.

So there was I, wondering around the market with a wide angled lens hoping to capture some rich candid shots. The demeur of the butcher, as he watched me approach with my Nikon was such that I didn't feel safe photographing him surreptitiously and I nervously pointed to my camera and made signs with my face and shoulders which I intended to say, "Would you mind terribly if I photographed you?" This is his pose and not a word was exhanged between the two of us! I hurriedly left the market, checking over my shoulder as I went.

I was delighted to be awarded another Gold Award, this time for monocrome portraiture, in the monthly 'Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers' competition. This is my second gold success in two months. Bertie was a lovely man who wasn't too keen to be photographed and I usually had to chase him around Mourneview Park when he saw me with my camera!My October silver awards for Landscape, Pictorial and Exterior Architecture are included below.

The One Show

Another first! I was contacted by BBC's One Show regarding a feature they wanted to do about "haunted trees" around the country. My good friends at the Banbridge Leader passed on details regarding some shots I had taken of the the tree at Finnis, just outside Dromara, and the researchers were keen to get the images for broadcasting. My mum was very proud as she watched my photos being used on national television.

I particularly like the way the cloud in the later image almost represents the 'spirit of the tree' being released. You can read the story from the Banbridge Leader here.

Ulster Bank, Dromore

The Ulster Bank in Dromore is situated in the town's very busy, very narrow, Church Street. The two storey building was inserted into a terrace by local architect Henry Hobart and it's beauty is often missed as one rushes between Market Square and the Cathedral on your way to Belfast, Banbridge or Lurgan. The sandstone and red brick facade can only be appreciated when viewed from a distance, such as the top of Lottery Place car park, but is well worth taking time to admire Hobart's design.

This image was taken during a family portrait session at home. A completely natural moment, the little girl simply jumped up onto the seat to look at her shoes! I'm glad I was there to capture the moment. Do you think she might grow up to be a fashion model?

This little lad was captured during a family photoshoot on location at Annalong Caravan Park. I love the picture of concentration and enthusiasm on his face as toddles as quickly as possible towards his mum.I was attracted to the sisters as they ran together in the park. Their colourful clothes against the green grass and the way the sun highlights their hair makes this a favourite image of childhood for me.

I was delighted to receive a gold award for this landscape image of the Old Schoolhouse at Mullan's Corner, Dromore, in the Society of Portrait and Wedding Photographers monthly image competition for September. The building is a well known landmark for the thousands of travellers who journey along the A1 from Banbridge to Lisburn. The image is deemed to be of the highest professional standard and will go forward to the Society's annual judging and will be published in Professional Imagemaker.

Dromore Cathedral

The Cathedral, known as the Cathedral Church of Christ the Redeemer, stands on the bank of the River Lagan where Saint Colman built his first church of ‘daub and wattle’ around 514AD. The building is an interesting mixture of various architectural periods, all clearly visible in its structure. Inset in one of the internal walls is an ancient stone, marked with a simple cross and know as Saint Colman’s Pillow, suggesting perhaps the strict rule of Colman’s monastic life.

Twelfth Parade

Dromore enjoyed fine weather for this year's Twelfth morning parade through the town. Orangemen, led by Skeogh Flute Band, made their way from the Orange Hall on the Hillsborough Road to board buses on the Banbridge Road, detouring as they always do, to allow the band to play a number of tunes for the residents of Skeagh House.

Dromore Civic Week included a Soap Box Derby. The route took drivers from the top of the hill at Mount Street all the way to the flat of Market Square - not for the faint hearted! The event proved very popular with the many friends and families who turned out to watch the action.

Dromore Civic Week began in beautiful sunshine with hundreds of people enjoying a wide range of activities and events. Highlight of the afternoon was the unveiling of a classic Harry Ferguson tractor, a tribute to the great engineer and inventor, which will greet visitors to Dromore. The ceremony was performed by Banbridge District Chairman, Norah Beare, assisted by William Copeland, Neil Reid, Helen McFadden, Norman Fairley, Jeffrey Donaldson MP, MLA, and David and Dean Herron.

Lorna and Noel Patterson from Dromore were out in style during Dromore Civic Week's Vintage Run. Noel spent eight years restoring his 1936 Morris Eight.

I made a small presentation of my commercial and family photography to the April meeting of the Business Network (Banbridge), which seemed to go down very well judging by the complimentary comments and requests for sittings which followed! The Business Network (Banbridge) is a network which has been jointly founded by local business owners and exists to support business owners in Banbridge and surrounding areas by: providing a networking, discussion and education forum; generating referrals and business leads; giving mutual support and sharing new ideas and business opportunities. Dromore Cycle Races

Banbridge Cycling Club were the main promoters when up to five events were up for showing to the general public in Dromore, Co Down. The John Beggs Memorial race has over the years been considered a tough race commencing from the Dromore Scout Hall on the Ballynahinch Road and covering 56 miles on an eight mile circuit. The John Beggs Memorial race catered for category Senior 1 and Senior 2 riders.

The Sean McGreevy Memorial race covers the same circuit as the competitors in the John Beggs Memorial race, caters for Senior 3 ,Veterans ,Women and Juniors, but covering only 40 miles of the eight mile circuit.

For the first time ever in 2008, Banbridge Cycle took a gamble in promoting the first ever tandem race in Northern Ireland and they did so again in 2009.

Dromore and District Male Voice Choir held it's 52nd Annual Concert recently at Dromore High School with Conductor and Musical Director, David Thompson, and guest artistes Jenny Bourke and Gillian McCutcheon.

Ian McFarlane, secretary of the Dromore and District Male Voice Choir, with the choir's Hungarian member, Isdvan Pal, during the choir's 52nd annual concert in Dromore High School. Isdvan has been with the Dromore choir for two years now and previously sang in a choir in Budapest.

March was a month of milestones for Dromore man Ernie Martin who marked both his 80th birthday and his retirement after 15 years of faithful service as Sexton to First Dromore (Non-Subscribing) Presbyterian Church.
Once hailed as 'the best joiner in Dromore' by a former employer, Ernie's service to his own church, and others in the area, has drawn on his trade, as well as his faith.

Ernie spent 38 years working for John Graham (Dromore), reaching the managerial position of Joinery Foreman before working for several other local construction companies.One of a family of craftsmen - his late father Walter and late brother Joe were also noted carpenters with John Graham(Dromore) - among other things Ernie turned his 'God-given' talent to making the pulpits for Banbridge Road Presbyterian Church, Dromore and Drumlough Presbyterian Church.Described as a brilliant woodworker, he can certainly be said of have left his mark, in more ways than one, at First Dromore (Non-Subscribing), where in the early 1980s he personally constructed the two 16-foot windows at either side of the pulpit, as well as the sacramental War Memorial window.

Beyond that, having taken over the sexton's position from the late Mr. Billy Mitchell in 1994, he has for decades been actively involved in various church activities, including the Property Committee, helping to ensure the smooth running of Christian worship in the Rampart Street meeting house.Ernie's oft-quoted life philosophy - "better wearing out than rusting out" - is equally evident in his other pursuits, which between them demonstrate an until-recently tireless athleticism, a commitment to charity, a passion for music and, again, his skill at woodworking, with which he has produced five guitars and the racing body for a 1929 Riley sports car.A keen sportsman, he began in the mid-1980s to take part in fun-runs, only lately hanging up his running shoes, and his most recent achievements include raising £1,720 for the Paul Russell Trust Fund.

His love of music finds voice not only in his church choir, but among the ranks of the renowned Dromore and District Male Voice Choir, of which he has been a member for some 20 years.The congregation of First Dromore (Non-Subscribing) Presbyterian Church presented Ernie, and his wife Norah, with gifts last week, to mark his retirement as Sexton. Glenavon 3-1 Dungannon Swifts

Glenavon are virtually safe from a relegation play-off after beating bottom-placed Dungannon Swifts. Marty told me after the match that he was 99% certain that Glenavon will still be playing premiership football next season. Today's win took Glenavon eight points clear of the Swifts with just nine points to play for. Glenavon have lost just one of the seven Premiership matches played since Marty Quinn took over as manager.
James Costello dedicated his goal to the memory of a good friend's mother who died at the weekend. "Elvis" celebrated his goal in the fashion of Everton's Tim Cahill.

I have recently added to my published credits by having my work included in the All Ireland Kitchen Guide - Northern Ireland's largest selling kitchen magazine. Dromore Northern Ireland Supporters Club celebrated its 15th anniversary with a dinner at Thyme Square, Dromore. Chief guest was Sammy Wilson. 'Born and bred' in Dromore, Sammy has been described as “a superstar centre-forward, pure class, strength and skill” who “scored goals for fun”, and made an impressive leap from the Irish League to the international stage… The local club celebrated Sammy's achievements with a stunning trophy and awarded him the the honorary title of club President.
Officers of the Dromore NI Supporters Club - Bryan Lindsay, Dessie Armstrong, Campbell McCreedy, Steven Mawhinney (Chairman) and Arty McDonald - were pleased to honour Sammy Wilson at the club's 15th anniversary dinner in Thyme Square, Dromore.

Committee members from the Amalgamation of NI Supporters Clubs, David Thompson, Gary McAllister (Press Officer), Phil Smith (Chairman) and Ricky McIntyre congratulate Sammy Wilson on his award by the Dromore NI Supporters Club to recognise his achievements.

Sammy played with distinction for Glenavon, Coleraine, Falkirk, Dundee and won 12 international caps. Typically modest, Sammy said that it had always been a pleasure and an honour to represent his club, country, family and hometown of Dromore.

Dromore Remembers

The Royal British Legion (Dromore Branch) organised a public service of remembrance in light of recent events in Northern Ireland. Local people gathered at Market Square, Dromore, to pay their respects to two servicemen and policeman, murdered by terrorists. Jeffrey Donaldson MP, MLA and Royal British Legion Chairman, Colin Ward, addressed the crowd. Local clergy contributed also. The 'Last Post' was played by Luke Trueman as Dromore remembered Patrick Azimkar, Mark Quinsey and Stephen Carroll.

Colin Ward, Chairman of the Royal British Legion (Dromore Branch) believed that it was important for the Legion to indicate the strength of local disgust at recent terrorist activity in Northern Ireland, and to involve the local community, clergy and councillors.

Banbridge at a standstill for funeral

He's just 7 months old and yet in his lifetime Glenavon has had three managers! As well as supporting his local team, I'm told that Evyn is a great Liverpool supporter - much to his grandad's consternation!

The local family owned business started by Mr Steve Orr commenced operations in Dromore during 1996 and operates a 2004 constructed $ 15 Million US facility based in Junction City, Kansas.

The company have received two Queen’s awards for Technical innovation and International Sales and have become one of the leading agricultural netting companies in the World exporting to in excess of 40 countries.

Newbridge College Formal

I was delighted to cover the Newbridge College Formal at the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast. Newbridge Integrated College is situated in Loughbrickland, Co Down. The pupils were well mannered and very patient waiting for their turn to be photographed. Many of the integrated college's staff also attended and it was interesting to witness the very obvious respect and friendship between teachers and pupils. Especially pleasing for me was that I have photographed quite a few of the families of young people attending this school function and so we had a chance to exchange a 'bit of banter'. Valencia is one of my favourite holiday destinations. There is a great mixture of modern and ancient architecture and, while it is Spain's third largest city, it never seems to be overcrowded. So many restaurants and beaches to explore. The Plaza de la Virgin is a wonderfully atmospheric place by day or night.

Marty Quinn’s first League game in charge of Glenavon ended in a vital win for the Lurgan Blues against Lisburn Distillery. A reshuffled back line of Mark Haughey, right back, Mark Gracey and Jay Magee at centre back and Paul Carvill at left back, after a shaky opening five or ten minutes, settled down and looked solid, with keeper Andrew Plummer not having too many saves to make. Substitute Gary Liggett scored from eight yards out after Philip Matthews had parried a Jay Magee shot to earn Glenavon a crucial three points. I've been fortunate to be able to attend the annual convention of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers for a second year. I am a qualified member of the society and have had a wonderful time in seminars and workshops with some of the world's finest photographers.
